Sunday at 1:00pm - 3:30pm
Centre for Gender Advocacy (1500 de Maisonneuve, Ste 404)
As racialized, Indigenous, and mixed-race folk, we very often come into the world with a story of what we are not: white, whole, beautiful, enough. This story is the soul of colonization: it drains us of the will to struggle, of the confidence to name ourselves and our ancestors, the vision to see each other and act in solidarity. The colonizer's story is thus an anti-story, an unstory; it erases and diminishes our bodies and rips away our languages. The colonizer's story surrounds and suffocates us, blocking out life and light.

But the most powerful stories are born in the dark.

Join ASIAN ARTS FREEDOM SCHOOL MONTRÉAL for this immersive/intensive/interactive workshop on storytelling, poetry, and spoken word, facilitated by KAI CHENG THOM aka LADY SIN TRAYDA. The potential of stories as both revolutionary and therapeutic will be explored, as will the possibilities and limitations of writing/storytelling in indigenous versus colonial languages. Participants will experiment with the use of story tools, including meditation, visualization, play, story-listening, and group creation. Poets, writers, rappers, spoken word artists, slam poets, storytellers of all kinds and at all stages welcome!

LADY SIN TRAYDA aka RYAN KAI CHENG THOM is a fiery writer, performer, spoken word artist and drag-dance sensation. A little Chinese grrl with a big, lipsticked mouth, her words pack a revolutionary punch that takes the fight right to the heart of expectation, stereotyping, and all kinds of oppression. Lady Sin and her alter-egos have traveled across Canada to bring poetic performances to pages and stages from her hometown of Vancouver to her current haunts in Montreal. She has featured at such venues as the Vancouver Poetry Slam, the Throw Poetry Collective, Montreal’s Radical Queer Semaine, and the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word, competing as a finalist at the Verses International Poetry Festival 2012. She has performed alongside such artists as D’bi Young, Kalmunity Vibe, and the Montreal Slam Team, and is a resident at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts’s Spoken Word Residency 2013.Lady Sin has also been a featured columnist for The McGill Daily and Youngist, with journalistic pieces also appearing in The Fulcrum and The Charlebois Post. Their poetry has appeared in, ditch, OutWrite: A Queer Review, Intersections Journal, Kanata Journal, Convergence Journal and What If? Magazine, among others. Lady Sin and her work have been profiled by Concordia University’s The Link and CKUT Radio’s The Morning After.

    Qouleur

Ce Qollectif est composé d’artistes, d’écrivains et de militants vivant a Montréal (Québec) qui ont choisi de donner de leur temps et énergie pour amener une conscience des identités et des expériences racisées queer a l’avant-scène.
    ---
A grass-roots Qollectif of artists, performers, writers and political activists based in Montreal, Quebec who have decided to volunteer their time and energy to bring awareness of racialized queer identities and experiences to the wider public. We work to bridge the gaps between communities and create an open space for voices that all too often go unheard.
